Earth Child Institute
Earth Child Institute (ECI) is an international non-profit organization committed to combating climate change, deforestation, and water scarcity by investing in hands-on environmental and educational projects with and for children, both in and out of schools. They engage with and support the empowerment of the world’s 2.2 billion people under the age of 18 to facilitate the planting of trees and to ensure access to safe water, sanitation, clean energy, and nutritious food. While environmental degradation is global in magnitude, the daily challenges are largely experienced at the community level, where children, young people, and their families live. Every child has the right to a healthy, productive, and dignified life, and ECI believes that taking care of the environment we all depend on for life is the key to protecting this right. That is why ECI is dedicated to creating new and participatory solutions for community-based sustainable development that will reduce risk and increase resilience to the changing global environment.
Earth Child Institute is dedicated to:
Facilitating intergenerational dialogue and debate between children and policymakers on substantive issues related to climate change adaptation and mitigation, water and sanitation, REDD+, clean energy, education for sustainable development and environmental health;
Ensuring that the rights and capacities of children and young people are addressed in emerging environmental governance and educational policies;
Empowering children and young people for pro-environmental action based on their ability to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others in their communities and beyond by thinking globally and acting locally;
Building awareness and capacity of policymakers, teachers, parents, and youth facilitators who influence the lives of children to implement child-friendly quality education as a key strategy toward sustainable development;
Negotiating for new policy commitments internationally and in national contexts to ensure that the promises of decision-makers are a core element of long-term funding commitments toward implementation of agreed-upon goals and principles.
